Business Cycles
In the Midwest we are used
to seeing extremes in the weather. In the spring, one day it may be snowing and
the next day it may be sunny and 70 degrees. The old saying, "If you don't like
the weather in the Midwest, wait ten minutes", is rooted in fact. Our weather
can change quickly but the seasonal cycles continue.
Business cycles are
similar to weather cycles although they tend to last longer. Recent economic
problems have political hacks pointing fingers and pontificating about whose
fault it is and what steps they would take if they were in charge. Unlike the
weather, constant complaints from politicians, pundits and media can effect and
even change the direction of an economy. Whether real or imagined, negativity
regarding the economy can have an impact.
Many businesses make the
mistake of thinking that even a perceived slow down in the economy means they
have to cut back and often the easiest place to cut back is promotions and
advertising. There is an often used analogy that is very appropriate in these
circumstances. "How well you weather the storm depends largely on how steady the
hand is on the tiller". In other words don't panic, maintain the programs and
processes that have proven to be successful so far.
Like the person who
puts his snow shovel away to early, a business that cuts back on promotions and
advertising during a lull may have a tougher time digging themselves out later.
There is a reason both weather and business are discussed in cyclical terms, no
matter how bad a storm or business climate may be, calm and sunshine usually
follow. |
Batteryless Digital Camera
Engineers have created a digital camera that generates it's own power. The low
resolution camera captures excess light to the sensor and converts that light to
energy that powers the camera.
The innovative camera currently has no
storage capacity and is strictly a prototype that proves the technology is
possible. The creators say there is no reason other than cost that a high
resolution version could not be created.
Security and surveillance
applications are obvious sources of interest in the project.

Despite the old saying, "Don't take your troubles to bed", many women still

I pulled a tissue and 5 came out. For a brief, terrifying moment I felt
