Why You Are So Special
We only have one Granddaughter so I
often tease her by telling her that she is by far my favorite Granddaughter. She
laughs and says, “I know, because I am your only Granddaughter." She often asks,
"What if you get another Granddaughter, will I still be your favorite?" I always
tell her, "You will always be my favorite oldest Granddaughter?" She knows we
are just having fun but she still likes to hear that she is the favorite. We all
like to feel like we are special.
Customers like it when they feel like
they are special to a business as well. We can't just tell our customers they
are special can we? We can, but it may be better received if we tell them why
they are important to our business.
Years ago, we went out to eat while
visiting my in-laws. My Mother-in-law and Father-in-law ate at the same
restaurant just about every Saturday night. While we were enjoying our meal, the
owner approached and said hello, my in-laws introduced me and after the normal
pleasantries the business owner told us that it was people like my in-laws that
visited his restaurant regularly that kept him in business. He went on to tell
us that the business was responsible for feeding his children all of which had
worked in the restaurant at one time or another. He thanked my in-laws again for
their business and went back to serving other customers. My in-laws continued to
eat there until the business was sold years later.
A sincere appreciation
for the business a customer brings us is a critical part of the service process.
Without that appreciation a customer can be easily swayed to go with a
competitor. How we show appreciation to our customers is often unique to our
respective industries. The concept is the same no matter what business we are
in, the appreciation must be sincere and it should be delivered in such a way
that it isn't construed as marketing.
Many businesses use special
discounts, customer appreciation days, product workshops and more to let
customers know they are appreciated. It does not matter how we show our
customers that we appreciate their business, the critical thing is that we show
them how important they are to our continued success.
Most people want to
help others and if they can purchase a quality product or service and feel
appreciated by the business owner they feel the transaction was a success. Our
customers should feel special; after all they are the reason for our success. |
Pokémon Go
Pokémon Go, a mobile game app that overlays a
Google map over a game world has surprised many with it's sky rocketing
popularity.
As with any phenomenon the large number of people playing
the game has created a few less than pleasant results. There are reports of
people entering an Australian Police Station and bothering employees while
looking to "capture" a game character when they could gather the character
digitally without entering the building. Missouri police have confirmed that
four teens in the St. Louis area lured people to "Game Character" locations and
then robbed them. The game can also create a digital character location that
lands on private property, prompting concerns of trespassing and the resulting
conflicts.
There is good news that goes along with the Nintendo game as
well. Many say the game is prompting them to be more active as they search for
game character collection sites. With technology typically adding to the
problems associated with an over weight nation it is nice to see a mobile app
that does the opposite. Others have reported meeting through the app and setting
up dates.
It will be interesting to see the effects of the game after the
hysteria dies down.

Free software to determine
hard drive space usage

SpaceSniffer
With large capacity hard drives becoming
the norm I thought we should revisit a tool that will help you determine where
all of that space is going. SpaceSniffer is a portable and free solution that
graphically displays how the space on your hard drive is being used.
After scanning a hard drive you can examine large files and folders by clicking
on them to see a larger view of the file or folder that is hogging all of that
space. You can tag selected files using four different colors so you can examine
them later. Filter files by type, date and more.
If you want to see all
files older than two years you can filter the SpaceSniffer results and determine
if the files are worth saving. You can also filter by file size as well as
combine filters.
