Optimizing Content
It is important that
the content of your website is optimized. The question is what should your
website be optimized for? Should it be optimized for validation, optimized for
search engines, optimized for browser load times or optimized for visitors? The
simple answer is yes! Your website should be optimized for all four.
Many new website
designers focus solely on W3C Validation (World Wide Web Consortium). W3C
Validation allows users to check html and other documents to see if they are
“marked up” or written correctly. While this is good, it may not help you find
your way in to top search engine placement and it may not play well with all
visitors. It is important to note that there is a balancing act that needs to be
done when optimizing a website. Some designers think that if they use specific
software to design a website all of their optimization issues will be taken care
of. This simply isn't the case.
While W3C validation
is a good start experienced designers know that optimizing content for search
engines is just as important. Key words and phrases, properly applied help
connect your product or service to your website. A search engine reviews your
website and if your site content is relevant to the key words and phrases found
on the site it will index the site in its search results accordingly (simplified
explanation).
Browser load times are measured by the length of
time it takes to display your website content in a given browser. Each browser
can be different but typically if a site loads quickly in one browser it will do
so in most of the other common browsers. Scripts such as JavaScript and jquery
to name a few, as well as the number and size of photos, videos, embedded
objects and more determine the load time of a given page. It is critical that a
page load quickly or visitors may leave before they see your content.
Ultimately your
website should be optimized for your visitors. The content should provide
relevant information about your product or service. Your website should be easy
to navigate and load easily in the most common browsers. Ideally your visitors
will view your website as a resource they can return to again and again. |
Is Your Refrigerator Attacking People on the Internet?
Probably not, but if your refrigerator is connected to the internet (some are),
and it is not secure (maintains it's own firewall etc.), it may be hacked and
used along with thousands of other insecure technologies to attack unsuspecting
online victims. Hackers are using botnets (insecure tech items joined or hacked
together creating super computing power) to execute distributed
denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, brute force password crackers, pay-per-click
scams and other potentially nefarious acts.
Web cams, video security
cameras, smart home devices and more are being hacked to create these powerful
networks that are controlled by criminals, governments and even kids that are
playing around with connecting technology.
To find out more about these
attacks read this interesting article by Bruce Schneier,
Lessons From the Dyn DDoS Attack.
