Market Definition
Defining your target
market can be complex, time-consuming, and if you allow it to be, costly.
However, there are simple steps you can take that will narrow your target market
significantly and help you produce positive results.
Step One:
Narrow down whether
the majority of your target market is male or female. This can usually be done
to a point where there is an obvious majority. It is no secret that Men and
Women buy and spend differently so you have already gained an advantage. There
are times when gender will not play a role in your marketing campaign but you
should always be aware of the fact that gender may impact consumption.
Step Two:
Determine the age
ranges of your market, stay within 10-15 year groups since different age ranges
will require different marketing techniques.
Step Three:
What do the people in your target market do for a
living? Are they doctors, lawyers or candlestick makers (if they are candlestick
makers you are targeting an obsolete market, move on)? If you are targeting
businesses then determine the size of the business and the budget available.
Your marketing approach will differ greatly between a mom and pop business and a
fortune 100 company.
Step Four:
Focus on the details. Why do people in your
target market buy your type of product or service? How often do they buy? How
much do they spend on your product or service annually? The more specific your
questions are the more targeted your marketing campaign becomes.
There are many questions to ask when determining
your target market but these should get you started and help you focus in on a
group that wants and needs your product or services. |
Digital Task Managers - The New Notebook
More than ten
years after David Allen published his book "Getting Things Done", a recent wave
of articles and advice on productivity still reference the GTD (Getting Things
Done) approach. These articles often recommend task managers or to-do lists. A
few of the task managers mentioned most often are listed below. Each of these
applications offers free and paid versions. The paid versions offer several more
features and are reasonably priced. The free versions allow for basic task
management and project tracking.

7-Zip
File archiver and file encryption tool.
|
7-Zip
7-Zip does much more than just create .zip
archives. The free and open source software will create or pack 7 different file
types and unpack as many as thirty file types. If you need to compress files for
storage or to share via email or the web, 7-Zip is a convenient program to have
around.
7-Zip is well known for its ability to create, compress and
unpack archives but many don't know that it is a great file encryption tool as
well. 7-Zip allows you to create an archive and password protect the file or
files with AES 256 bit encryption. AES 256 bit encryption is typically used in
SSL connections and is considered a robust, secure encryption method. You can
encrypt sensitive forms or financial documents if you need to store them on your
computer. Be sure to remove the originals once you have encrypted and tested the
new file.
7-Zip is easy to use and there are several online videos
available if you need help. Be certain to protect the password used when you
encrypt the file(s) because there is no way to recover the data if the password
is lost. I strongly suggest using a password manager like LastPass, Dashlane, or
RoboForm to store your passwords (These programs encrypt your passwords.) so you
always be able to decrypt your files when you need them.
You can download and find out more about 7-Zip from the
7-Zip.org page or its
SourceForge
page.
