Small Business?
I often hear people say, "I just run a small
business." So do most people! Of approximately 25 1/2 million businesses
recorded in the 2004 census approximately 19 1/2 million had no employees (other
than owners of course). Another 2.7 million had 4 or less employees. And still
another million companies had 9 employees or less. That means that of the 25.5
million businesses recorded over 23 million had 9 employees or less.
Don't sell yourself short, you and others like
you are what make the US economy work. Large companies had higher sales receipts
but when looked at logically this makes sense. A company with 500 employees
needs to make at least as many sales as 500 individually owned businesses just
to meet payroll, benefits and other overhead expenses.
As a matter of fact,
in 2006, the National Federation of Independent Business pointed out that "Small
businesses represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms, employ half of all
private sector employees and pay 45 percent of total U.S. private payroll." The
Federation further explains that, "Small business has generated 60 to 80 percent
of net new jobs annually over the last decade."
Without small
businesses there would be a huge gap in specialized products and services. Many
small businesses fill gaps that large companies simply can't fill. There isn't
enough money involved for a large company to justify the expense required to
serve these markets. And don't forget the personal touch that small business can
offer, big business just can't compete in this arena.
Just remember, your
small business along with others like you makes for big business when you look
at the numbers. |
