Market the Solution Not the Product

Target marketing is often thought of as defining a target audience and focusing your marketing efforts on that specific group. This approach works well if your marketing efforts are solution based and not product driven. In other words, promote the solution your products offer instead of the product itself.

Marketing a product for its potential for sales alone is a recipe for mediocre sales and poor customer loyalty. Focusing on sales alone can create a “you vs. them” atmosphere which is not conducive to repeat sales. For example: If your business sells umbrella’s, avoid ads stating that you offer umbrellas and try something like this instead; “Tired of getting wet as you run from the grocery store to your car? Our umbrella will keep you dry, even during a downpour.”

Marketing strategies should be developed based on "solutions" not on "sales". Successful advertising campaigns send the message that you and your product can solve a specific problem. A solution-based approach gives people a reason to purchase your product. Offer the solution to your customer’s problem and your sales will increase and customer loyalty will multiply.
