Recent events have placed a
lot of strain on small business
owners. Not only have many
businesses had to modify hours,
and adjust the way they interact
with customers, still others
have been closed altogether. It
is difficult enough to navigate
the small business landscape
without adding a global pandemic
to the mix.
Most
businesses can return to work
and begin the process necessary
to regain their market and
rebuild their cash flow. But the
stress still exists. There are
several proven methods to help
reduce stress, a few of them are
outlined below.
Exercise While not
only good for your physical
health, the act of exercising
releases endorphins which
relieve stress. Exercising is
also when some people get their
best ideas.
Shutdown for awhile
I know this is a
counter-intuitive way of dealing
with being closed or having to
deal with reduced hours. But
closing the doors, avoiding
phone calls, and emails for 1/2
an hour a day will not destroy
your business. It may be just
what you need to retain your
sanity.
Mediate
before, after, or during work
(for some, during work
may not be an option)
Take 10 minutes and let the
phone roll to voicemail, don't
check email, only respond if a
customer needs you. Just relax,
clear your mind, and take some
me-time. Many people find it
helpful to focus on what they
are grateful for (as mentioned
in our
January newsletter) . Think
about the people, places, and
things you are grateful for and
why.
Add fun
things to do on your to-do list It elevates a round
of golf, getting drinks with
friends, or hanging out with
your children to the same level
as updating expenses, or doing
inventory. This improves the
balance between work and play,
which many experts cite as a key
to reducing stress.
Spend more time with
family It is
difficult to be stressed while
playing with a toddler or
enjoying a movie with loved
ones.
Find
something to make you laugh
Enjoying a funny
movie, video, website, or stand
up comedian can make you laugh.
According to the Mayo Clinic,
laughter can relieve your stress
response and soothe tension, as
well as stimulate circulation
and aid muscle relaxation.
Laughter can also improve your
immune system and relieve pain
Get a good night's
sleep Many believe
the best day starts the night
before. Get to sleep at a decent
time and your entire next day
may be better. Problems are
compounded when you are tired,
so sleep more and reduce your
stress.
The next time
stress seems to be winning, take
a break, and try one of these
tips. You deserve it.
