Multiple Audiences
While working on a home improvement project recently I stopped to consider
my next step. Two of our grown sons were visiting and one of them entered the
room from the door behind me. I asked without looking up what they thought the
next step should be?
Our sons, like anyone else, have different
strengths, one is very good at rough construction, another can handle the fine
detailed work and the third is very mechanical. At that moment I needed the one
with fine detail skills but since I hadn't looked first I ended up with the one
with rough construction skills. I listened, although only half heartedly since I
knew this wasn't an area he excelled in. I should have posed my question to the
right audience.
A website can develop similar problems as a business
grows and expands its line of products and services. The home page may address
the needs of many of your visitors but may not address the needs of others. Take
a moment and examine what your visitors may be looking for when they arrive at
your website. Is it obvious that you offer what they need? If not, it may be
time to modify your home page so it can address each of your audiences.
If you have recently added a new page to your website or added a new product
line to your business offerings make certain the item is referenced on the home
page of your site. If visitors can’t readily find information about the item(s)
they will move on. In most cases a menu link will not suffice. Visitors want to
know they have arrived at the right place. Promoting product lines that aren’t
referenced on the home page of your site is like giving out a phone book with
every other name missing, your visitors may not find what they need and will
undoubtedly become frustrated.
You can use bold headers to highlight each
major product line or service and link to the appropriate content from there.
Otherwise your visitors will end up getting answers to questions they never
asked. |
eDrink and a Hollow Flashlight
Ann Makosinski was
recently named a “Young Inventor of the Year” by Popular Science Magazine. Her
inventions, the eDrink and Hollow Flashlight not only serve a practical purpose
but they are environmentally friendly as well.
The Hollow Flashlight
turns the heat from a users hand in to energy which powers the light. Ann
created the flashlight when she was 15 years old and won the coveted Google
Science fair for her age group.
The eDrink is a mug that creates
electricity by converting some of the heat from a hot cup of coffee and using
that electricity to trickle charge your phone or other device.
You can
read more about the eDrink at
Mega Tech News and view a video of Ann Makosinski on the Tonight Show with
Jimmy Fallon. Ann is currently a student at the University of British Columbia.

Send Anywhere
Send Anywhere makes it easy and convenient
to transfer files using most devices. Large files are no problem since Send
Anywhere allows for files as large as 10GB with some plugins.
You can transfer files
using virtually any device and the Send Anywhere website also allows you to send
files directly from their home page. You choose the files to be transferred and
a 6 digit code is generated that you pas along to whoever you wish to receive
the file transfer. The person receiving the file(s) inputs the code and
downloads the files. The 6 digit code is valid for a limited time so it is
important the file transfer is coordinated.
Send anywhere has an
app for ios, Android, Windows desktops as well as a plugin for Gmail, Outlook
and more. The service is free and provides a unique solution to several transfer
problems.
