Secure Connections
A recent Google initiative prompted
many website hosts to come up with plans to provide secure encryption for https
transactions on each website. Secure Sockets Layer, better known as SSL, creates
an encrypted link between the server and the browser. This creates a secure
environment for website visitors by encrypting the data passed between the
browser and the server. Best known by the little padlock displayed in the
address bar of your browser, secure certificates or SSL have been used for years
on ecommerce websites, critical forms such as employment applications and other
sites or sections of a site that needed the additional security encryption
offers.
Google first announced that forms collecting data such as your
name, email address, etc. that were not encrypted on the server would prompt a
"Not secure" warning in the chrome browser. In the past, typical contact forms
did not use SSL or display the padlock in the browser address bar. A more recent
announcement by Google stated that websites that did not offer SSL could be
ranked lower by the search engine giant.
At PPP Design we made the
decision to not only add SSL to all sites hosted on our servers but to upgrade
our servers to the latest technology available. The SSL provided will be in the
form of a shared certificate. Sites that need additional security for ecommerce
and critical data transfer like social security numbers etc. will still want to
continue using the individual SSL certificates they have been using. The
additional shared SSL will apply to the rest of your website.
Many sites
have been migrated to the new server and have had the SSL applied. Over the next
few weeks all of our websites will be migrated and secured with SSL. We felt it
was important for us to address this issue so each individual website would not
have to come up with its own solution. The server will automatically redirect
visitors to the https://yoursitename.com address once the SSL is applied.
Setting aside all of the technical jargon, the changes being made will help
you to maintain or enhance your Google search index or ranking while adding
additional security for your website visitors. |
